Pretty WomenWhile trying to find his Beverly Hills hotel, a tycoon corporate raider, Edward Lewis, played by Richard Gere, accidently meets Vivian Ward, a Hollywood prostitute. Vivian Ward, played by Julia Roberts, is hired by Edward Lewis as a date for a whole week.

Julia Roberts portrays Vivian Ward brilliantly as a prostitute suddenly taken into the world of the ultra rich where anything you could desire is just a call away. Normally, she has been able to get just enough clients to survive with her drug-using roommate. Since Vivian does not even have a high school diploma, she chose prostitution as the only higher paying alternative to working in fast food restaurants.

Now, Vivian is staying in a hotel suite that has a bathroom about as big as her whole apartment and an unlimited number of people to wait on her. As a date for Edward Lewis, she is swept up in the snobbish, Hollywood culture on Rodeo Drive. After being asked to leave an exclusive boutique, Vivian is desperate to learn how to dress and eat at a high class restaurant. She finds a sympathetic hotel manager at the Beverly Hills Hotel who has his own boutique manager work with Vivian personally from hair to shoes, giving her a stunning and elegant appearance.

Both Edward Lewis and Vivian Ward come from extreme ends of society and could not be more different. However, they do share one thing in common; they both use their clients in a cold, unemotional manner. But later on, what begins as a business contract quickly evolves into to much, much more.

Richard Gere is very convincing as Edward Lewis, showing a cool, calculating manner, totally involved in winning his business deals. He spends almost all day and night on the phone, planning his next move and meeting with his lawyer, never taking a day off. But that changes when Vivian enters the picture.

Over the week, the poor prostitute escorts the rich industrialist to a client dinner, a polo game, and is flown on his private jet to San Francisco to hear an opera for the first time. As can be expected, there are a few twists and turns when things do not go smoothly at each of these events, causing both Vivian and Edward to reconsider who they are and what they should be doing in their lives.

This movie is a delightful romance that will have you guessing what will happen next with this bizarre mix of these two fascinating people.

Pretty Woman is rated R. Parents need to know that this film contains adult themes, strong sexual references, and sexual imagery.

En SoapI love not only American movies (by far my favorites) but films from all around the world as well. For example, I’d really recommend French, German, British, Italian, Iranian, Chinese, Japanese, Israeli, and Polish cinema. And if I were forced to select top-3 non-American films, I’d without any hesitation go with Italian, French and Polish cinema, in that order.

And for years I also tried to watch and love Scandinavian movies and spent many hours with the works of such bona fide masters of the medium as Ingmar Bergman. However, to this day, I somehow could not take a full shine to these introspective films from cold countries. They are usually dark, claustrophobic, slow, depressing, heavy, and stuffed to the gills with sexual angst, guilt and alienation. Watch one these northern beauties on a sunny weekend and then have a nice day, if you can! Really…

“En Soap” is another downer, this one from Denmark. A perfectly convoluted and screwed-up “art theater” and “indie festival” “ouvre.”

Story in a nutshell: a mid-aged blonde woman who owns a beauty salon (which we never see in the film) separates from her abusive husband and rents an apartment at a lower-middle class neighborhood. It is a dull chunk of “project” but with none of the vice associated with similar projects in the USA and with these gorgeous swinging cherry blossoms in full bloom in the courtyard.

The blonde protagonist Charlotte (played by Trine Dyrholm) meets the pre-op cross dresser “Veronica” (David Dencik) downstairs who turns ugly tricks for special S&M customers> These guys like to be abused, enslaved and pay good money for it too. Veronica’s life is spent within the four walls as he is slowly consumed and choked by his/her demons, fears, self-pity and his father’s rejection.

Slowly and eventually the two neighbors become close if not “friends,” they start to enjoy daily TV soaps together (and hence the title of the flick), and towards the end of the film, they become “almost lovers” but not quite.

Frustrated by her inability “to draw out the man” that she assumes hiding somewhere inside Veronica, Charlotte makes a futile attempt to make nice with her ex and go back home. But she bails out when she realizes she cannot go through the lies and pretense anymore.

But Charlotte cannot have a normal hetero relationship with the cross-dresser either since Veronica finally decides and gets the “governmental approval” needed to go through a full sex-change operation.

Through a very tender last sequence, we realize that Charlotte’s life will somehow continue to be linked to Veronica’s in one form or another although we do not quite know how. And on that final note we are left to project the possibilities into the future.

Miss this dark film and you haven’t missed much. Go watch “Victor/Victoria (1982)” instead.

Superman II"Superman II", the sequel to "Superman", stars many of the same actors as the original film in their original roles. The film is as entertaining and adventurous as the original. The acting is quite good, particularly that of the three arch-villains from Krypton (Terence Stamp as General Zod, Sarah Douglas as Ursa, and Jack O'Halleran as Non).

"Superman II" begins shortly after the original film left off. Perry White, chief editor of the Daily Planet, sends Lois Lane to Paris to investigate a terrorist plot to set of a hydrogen bomb from the Eiffel Tower. When Superman (disguised as Clark Kent) learns of this, he quickly removes his disguise and flies off to save her and send the bomb off into space. The bomb explodes a safe distance from Earth, but the explosion causes the Phantom Zone, in which the three arch-villains General Zod, Ursa, and Non have been captured and flying through space, to break, releasing them near the moon.

The three villains go to the moon, where they encounter a group of astronauts on a lunar mission. They quickly kill the astronauts and destroy the mission, learning of their new superpowers in the process. They then head to Earth to wreak more havoc.

Lois and Clark are sent to Niagra Falls posed as newlyweds to investigate a hotel scam. Superman saves a boy who accidentally falls off a rail above the falls. Lois suspects that Clark Kent is Superman, since as usual, he disappears as soon as Superman appears. In order to try to prove that he's Superman, she throws herself into the river, hoping Clark will remove his disguise and save her. Instead, he uses his heat vision to burn off a large branch from a tree, telling her to grab onto it. He then jumps in and rescues her without the need to use his powers.

Back in the hotel room, Clark stumbles and his hand accidentally ends up in the fire in the fireplace. However, when he removes his hand with no evidence of it having burned, Lois learns that he really is Superman. She professes her love for him and he falls in love with her as well. Superman flies off with her to his fortress on the North Pole, where they enjoy a nice, romantic dinner. Superman then receives a message from his long-deceased mother, telling him that in order to be with Lois, he must give up his powers, which he agrees to do.

Meanwhile, the arch-villains cause more trouble. After destroying a small town in Idaho, they fly off to Washington DC, break through the roof, and demand that the president step down and let General Zod take over the world. Reluctantly the president agrees, but tells him that Superman will not let him remain in power.

General Zod and his associates want to find Superman so they can challenge him. Lex Luthor shows up, having escaped from prison and learned of the villains' whereabouts. In exchange for Australia, he tells them to kidnap Lois Lane in order to lure Superman.

On their way back home from the North Pole, Lois and Clark wander into a diner. A big brute makes a pass at Lois. Clark tries to stop him but turns out to be no match for him. Lois manages to get away from him, however. Afterward, they watch TV and learn of the arch-villains' world takeover. Clark then insists on going back to the North Pole to try to get his powers back.

Shortly after Lois returns to the Daily Planet, the villains come along with Lex and kidnap her. Having regained his powers, Superman arrives to save her. The villains go after him, resulting in a big superbattle throughout Metropolis. In the end, however, Superman loses the battle and flies off to his fortress.

Only Lex knows of the location of the fortress, so he tells the villains how to get there. They take him and Lois there. Superman then battles it out with them again, but they grab Lois and threaten to kill her unless he backs off. Superman then secretly teams up with Lex and tells him to try to get the villains into a chamber, which will make them lose their powers. Lex betrays Superman, however, and tells the villains to make Superman go in their instead, which he does. Thinking he's lost his powers, General Zod then makes Superman kneel before him, grabbing his hand. However, in reality, Superman had retained his powers in the chamber and the villains had lost theirs. Thus, Superman crushes the general's hand and throws him off a tall cliff. Non tries to fly to stop Superman, but falls himself. Finally, Lois delivers a good punch to Ursa, which makes her fall to her death as well. Since Lex had betrayed Superman, which is in fact what he'd been counting on, Superman leaves him stranded in the fortress and flies back to Metropolis with Lois.

Back home, in order to keep his powers, Superman must end his romantic relationship with Lois, which he does with a kiss, which makes her forget about it and that Clark is Superman. Disguised as Clark, he goes back to the diner and teaches the thug who'd beaten him up earlier a lesson. Finally, Superman flies back to the White House, puts the roof back on, and apologizes to the president for having let him down.

Forest Gump"Forrest Gump" is an amusing tale of a mildly retarded man who ends up meeting three presidents as well as making a fortune and participating in and influencing several key historical events. Tom Hanks does a terrific acting job as Gump. The use of computer graphics imagery (CGI), by which Gump is shown meeting the presidents and Lt. Dan Taylor (Sinise) is made to appear as if his legs have been amputated, is also impressive.

Forrest Gump is born in a small town in Alabama, but he's born mildly retarded and handicapped, for which his legs are put in braces. His mother has frequent guests at her house, including Elvis Presley, before he becomes famous.

Once Forrest starts school, he falls for a blonde classmate named Jenny. Kids at his school pick on him because of his condition, but Jenny tells him to run from them, so he breaks his leg braces and runs as fast as he can, his adversaries unable to catch him.

The same thing happens to him in high school. This time, however, Forrest ends up running through the football field of the University of Alabama while a game is being played. The coach is so impressed that he puts Forrest on the team and gives him a scholarship, so he gets to attend college. Forrest plays exceptionally well, even getting invited to the White House to meet President Kennedy.

A few years later, Forrest gets drafted and sent to fight in Vietnam. There he meets Bubba, a black man whose family is in the shrimp business. He promises Bubba that he'll go into the shrimping business with him after the war. One day, the platoon is attacked by the Viet Kong and several soldiers become seriously wounded. Forrest carries several of them back, including Lt. Dan Taylor, head of the platoon, who'd had both his legs shot off. Dan is at first very upset with Forrest for saving his life since he now has no legs and he comes from a long line of soldiers who died in combat. Bubba becomes fatally injured.

During the war, Forrest learns to play ping pong and becomes an expert at it. As a result, he gets sent to China to compete and is given $25,000 to endorse a new set of ping pong paddles. President Nixon meets him and puts him up at the Watergate hotel, where Forrest witnesses the Watergate break-in and inadvertently reports it to the front desk, initiating the Watergate scandal.

Forrest uses most of the $25,000 he'd earned from ping pong to buy a shrimping boat and go shrimping with Dan, keeping a promise to Bubba. One day a huge storm hits, resulting in Forrest retrieving a boatful of shrimp. Furthermore, every other shrimping boat gets destroyed in the storm, giving Forrest a monopoly on the shrimp. As a result, Forrest makes a fortune. He gives most of the money to Bubba's mother, though.

Forrest returns to Jenny, whose life has been hell. He becomes intimate with her and wants to marry her, but she refused. Forrest becomes heartbroken and decides to run away. He ends up running continuously for three years, crossing the country several times and attracting a large group of followers. He then gets tired and decides to return home.

Back home, Forrest gets a call from Jenny, who now has a son whom she tells him is his. Forrest and Jenny get married, but she has a fatal disease (presumably AIDS), which she dies from shortly thereafter.

The Shawshank Redemption The Shawshank Redemption" is an incredible film about a terrible fictitious prison and the horrible experiences of a prison inmate wrongfully accused of murder. Despite his grave predicament, however, he manages to escape and right many wrongs. The movie stars Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman, both of whom do a terrific job.

Andy Dufrense (Robbins) is wrongfully convicted of the murders of his wife and her lover and sentenced to two lifetime sentences at Shawshank, a fictitious prison in Maine. Conditions at the prison are deplorable. Andy gets beaten and raped regularly. However, he proves very resourceful. He becomes friends with another inmate named Red (Freeman), who obtains a pick and posters of various actresses for him, which he posts on the wall of his cell.

After a few years, Andy demonstrates his elaborate knowledge of income tax laws, for which the warden lets him work for him to help him with his money laundering schemes. This buys him some freedom as well as better treatment.

A very old inmate who'd been sentenced for life finally gets paroled, but after some 50 years in prison, he doesn't want to leave anymore, having been institutionalized. He threatens to kill the warden in the hope that they'll keep him, but they let him go in any case. Shortly thereafter, he commits suicide.

After Andy has been at Shawshank for nearly 20 years, a prisoner named Tommy reveals that he has evidence of Andy's innocence. The warden calls him outside privately to ask him if he will testify on Andy's behalf, to which he says yes. As a result, the warden has him killed. Meanwhile, Andy has been in solitary confinement for a month and the warden decides to keep him for another month.

Unbeknownst to anyone at Shawshank, Andy had been working on an escape plan for nearly the entire time he'd been there. He'd been digging a hole through the wall, which he'd kept hidden by his posters. The warden learns of this when he finds Andy missing from his cell. Andy manages to escape after crawling through 500 yards of underground sewer pipe. Once freed, he presents evidence of the warden's illegal money laundering. Once the warden learns of this, he commits suicide before having the chance to be tried.

White Chicks – A Synopsis

White ChicksThe movie was an action comedy about 2 FBI detectives who were assigned to protect 2 daughters of a wealthy Wilson family from being kidnapped during a high profile Charity party. They were unsuccessful during their first assignment and were at the brink of losing their jobs. Determined to achieve success in their new assignment, the 2 detectives would have done almost anything to keep their job. Adept and well trained in the arts of undercover assignments the 2 FBI agents eventually decided to disguise themselves as the Wilson daughters after a driving incident hoping that the plan would have lead them to the potential kidnappers.

I thought the plot was shallow and the movie was meant to be taken as light entertainment. However, the movie did touch on the issue of satirical racism present in a real world scenario. There was a part in the movie where the two disguised FBI agents were at the front desk of a hotel lobby and their identifications and credit cards were requested from them as in any normal hotel front desk procedure. They were unable to comply with such requests as it would have blown their cover and decided to have a "bitch fit" . They said that they were of high social stature and as rich "white" women they didn’t deserve such "normal" treatment.

More hilarious incidents occurred as the 2 male detectives tried to blend into the lifestyle of the rich and famous for the weekend as the opposite sex and of the opposite "color". Coincidently, the 2 undercover FBI agents found out that they had made headlines in the local newspapers during the series of prestigious events with their new disguises hence fooling everybody including their own FBI chief. Soon, the 2 real women under protection in another hotel were perplexed to see that they were on the newspaper headlines without having attended the party themselves.

Realizing the situation, 2 other agents from the FBI manhandled the Wilson daughters thinking that they were their FBI colleagues in "white" female disguise. An embarrassing incident occurred where the two women were stripped naked resulting in the 2 disguised FBI agents along with their 2 other colleagues being relieved from their duty.

Another humorous part of the movie addressing the same racism issue was when a "black" basketball star commented to one of the FBI agents that he was not allowed to attend the all "white" party because the FBI agent was a "black" man. On the surface it seemed to suggest a racism issue. However, I thought in reality the term "black" and "white" best described in general a social and wealth status of a person instead of direct discrimination of their skin colors.

The movie climaxed when the FBI force, kidnappers, the 2 original women, and the 4 FBI "fired" agents were set on a collision course on the final day of the high profile Charity party that resulted in the capture of the potential kidnappers.

The Ring – A Synopsis

The RingThe movie utilized camera, editing, and special effects to conjure fear & suspense into the minds of viewers. Most scenes were pictured in a dark environment typical of horror movies. The story was about a strange video that resulted in death to the viewers after 7 days.

The movie began when a young female journalist was asked to investigate the mysterious death of her friend’s teenage daughter after watching the strange video.

One of the scenes in the movie was particularly scary for me. The closet scene had an abrupt close–up on the victim’s face that in my opinion successfully intensified the idea to emphasize the victim’s shocking experience before her death.

The same method were used for the other victims using similar "slow camera movement & final shock" technique amidst the eerie background music for example during the final scenes of the movie when she slowly approached the chair and turned the chair around to see the "pruned" corpse of her ex-husband.

The investigation led to the discovery of other similar deaths. The young female journalist watched the video and then began her own life threatening 7 day countdown.

Her ex-husband and their son eventually watched the same video and both of them together became even more determined to find the answers in order to survive the curse.

Coincidently, her ex-husband was some sort of professional video expert. There was a scene where the female journalist utilized a very large video VHS machine that could zoom, copy, and edit a VHS format video at her ex-husband’s office searching the video for clues. More mysterious events occurred as she progressed to her final cursed days and reached the locations of the scenes she found in the strange video.

The most frightening and interesting part of the movie was when the ghost stepped out of the video space from inside the television and into the office space because it raised the question of how a television was treated in Architectural space. An "undead" being had just stepped out from the television. Meaning the television had to be considered similar to a main entrance door in function. No longer is the television for example only an entertainment unit as a focal point in a living room.

An appropriate architectural idea was inherent in the scene to frighten people in an architectural space. The television was situated as the focal point directly opposite of the main entrance door to the office. The positioning of the television proposed itself as a mirror image to the main door, a gateway to an alternate reality. In my opinion the above idea went very well with the scene as the architectural element elevated the entire scene on to another entertainingly intellectual level.

Such an architectural idea was applied in the scene. The scene was taken from a single camera point and was similar to a 1 point Architectural perspective done with some fast forwarding and an array of shots combined during editing.

A murdered young girl seeking vengeance from beyond the grave and performed killings of anonymous people until her body was discovered and the truth revealed. A copy of the video must be made by each viewer to avoid death from her vengeful spirit.

Behind Enemy LinesThe movie was set in the war torn Yugoslavia of Eastern Europe during the late 1990s. A young navigator pilot on board a military aircraft carrier was bored of the unexciting routine flights and planned for an early retirement from the US Navy. What was meant to be another routine flight over a demilitarized zone at the borders of Yugoslavia suddenly turned into a dreadful experience when his plane was shot down and his pilot friend murdered by a mercenary sniper attached to the Serbian army. The "downed" navigator soon became a victim trapped in a web of war and suffocating politics, relentlessly pursued by the mercenary sniper as well as the Serbian army under the command of a merciless Serbian general. The general was determined to cover-up the perpetrated genocide of the Bosnian population by recovering the digital photographs of the mass graves taken from their fighter jet plane during their failed reconnaissance mission.

I especially liked the scene where the jet plane was pursued by 2 heat seeking missiles. When the man was about to fire the missiles, the camera focused on the man’s face as he looked into the sky purposefully and confidently. Then instantly the camera switched to his hands pushing the button to fire the missiles with "techno" music playing in the background. The next clip was of the missiles shot from the tank. The release of the missiles started with a loud and solid blast to a shrieking sound as it gained speed. The scene got more exciting as another missile pursued the jet fighter through the forest, brushing the snow off the tree tops at speeds past the sound barrier caused by the jets loud sonic boom. Unable to "shake off" the last missile, the pilot then decided for an almost suicidal "head on pass" maneuver to confuse the missile’s targeting system. The pass was almost successful except that the missile had "clipped" the right wing of the jet. The right wing was split into 2 rendering the plane uncontrollable. As the "smart" missile made a return path and approached its target, the camera then focused on the missile releasing its deadly payload in stages onto the jet. The navigator’s eyes were wide in shock as his face turned to look at the exploding missile amidst the heavy sounds of triggered alarms, highly charged and emotional background orchestra and opera music. The scene paused during shots and that created a more dramatic overall situation. The exploding missile triggered a fire that engulfed and cut the plane in half.

The same "pause" technique was used during the ejection scene and throughout the film to capture the similar intense moments. Such a combination of computer graphics and fantastic camera angles and video techniques in the sky made the scene successful in the sense that I felt as excited and intense just like being one of the pilots themselves.

Thereafter, unsuccessful rescue attempts to save the surviving navigator, the Navy Admiral of the aircraft carrier battle fleet began to feel responsible for the unfortunate events that had come upon the surviving navigator and the murdered pilot. The US Navy Admiral felt frustrated by the political hindrance set upon him because his counterpart from the allied forces unjustly opposed his actions for the sake of maintaining the realistically non-existing peace treaty in the Balkan Regions.

After receiving news that the surviving navigator had been found dead by the Serb forces, the US Navy Admiral was notified of a radio signal that could have only be activated by the downed pilot previously thought dead. Consequently US Navy Admiral decided to lead a final rescue mission to extract the surviving navigator pilot from behind enemy lines regardless the consequences to his safety and to his own career.

Cinderella ManOnce a week my boyfriend and I will sit down to watch a movie. Every time we do, we run into the problem of what to watch. This movie Cinderella Man was an easy pick for both of us. A five star rating indeed!

Cinderella Man (2005 Release)

Starring Russell Crowe, Renée Zellweger, and Paul Giamatti.

Cinderella Man is just a given for both of us. Russell Crowe stars as James Braddock. The story takes place in the 1930's, during the Great Depression. Braddock is stricken as hard by the Depression as the rest of the working world. When forced to take Public Relief and faced with losing his family, driven by his determination and the love of his family, Braddock once again rises to the top. The underlying motivation for him being first his family, and then the determination to succeed is truly inspirational. A simple man, he does whatever it takes to keep his family together and to put food on the table.

The reason I can watch this movie over and over is because of the TRUE "feel good" nature of the film. My boyfriend will say he loves the film due to the fact that it portrays a chivalry that no longer exists, and that Cinderella Man is one of the few movies that he can say portrays a "true" hero.

At the end of the movie, you are left with a warm feeling, a feeling that will stay with you for awhile. I definitely recommend this movie for movie night! It gets a five star rating from me, and is beyond rating for him.

Happy Movie Watching!

Chariots of Fire As a winner of the Academy Awards for Best Picture, Chariots of Fire won the hearts and minds of millions of people all over the world. The story is centered on two young, English men striving to achieve nothing less then the Olympic gold medal.

Who can not admire any person who strives with a constant, determined effort by the sweat of his brow, and the rush of his adrenalin, in order to be first - or nothing at all. Starring Ian Charleson and Ben Cross as two long distance runners in early 1900s England. For either of these men, second place is as good as a defeat.

Driven by desperate desires, Eric Liddell, played by Ian Charleson, and Harold Abrahams, played by Ben Cross, compete in arduous endurance training to give world Olympic glory to the United Kingdom. Liddell is a man of stern, Christian faith and believes God has given him a fateful gift, the ability to be one of the fastest runners in the world. Described by a bystander in the sidelines, "He runs like a mad man", as they watch him race, Liddell yearns to have victory for God first, and then Great Britain.

Likewise, Harold Abrahams looks at winning as a repudiation of the creeping anti-semitism within Europe and America. As a student at Cambridge, England, he is confronted with the long standing tradition of using only amateur trainers from the athletic department at school. His response is to make his point known to the president of the school; "You want what I want and that is to win, and that takes a professional trainer, not an amateur."

The two men run in both the rain and sunny skies alike, through the beautiful English countryside and along the beach. Both endure extreme workouts to build and tone their bodies. Both men sacrifice their personal lives to completely devote their time to training in order to get that extra few seconds of speed over each other, and all other rivals.

In the meanwhile, Harold Abrahams falls head over heels in love with a popular singer that does not understand his relentless ambition to always win every single race. Even though she walks away, later she decides to wait for him as he trains for the Olympics, even if it means him leaving her for a long extended period.

At the same time, Eric Liddell works at a feverish pace at both his missionary purpose and his running, often ending his races with a sermon on winning for God's glory. Later, the story takes a turn when he decides to lets his love, and fellow lady missionary, take over the mission - at least until he wins at the Olympics for God.

This movie shows the pressure put on these two men by the elaborate English culture filled with pomp and circumstance characteristic of the elite and royal families of that era. Even the Prince of Wales, the future King of England, gets involved with Eric Liddell in a politically sensitive matter. Thankfully help arrives, but from a totally unexpected source.

Based on a true story, Chariots of Fire won the Oscar for Best Picture of 1981 and is rated PG.
